Mucarsel-Powell, a Miami native returning to the political arena after becoming the first South American native ever elected to Congress, joined hundreds of supporters at Marina Jack as part of her campaign to unseat Republican Senator Rick Scott in November. She was joined by special guest Jamie Emhoff, the sister of Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, who was there representing the Harris-Walz ticket.
The rally for Mucarsel-Powell, who secured the Democratic nomination with an overwhelming 80 percent of the vote, was one of two evening events. The other event, a fundraiser at the Sarasota Yacht Club, garnered more than $115,000 from Sarasota supporters.
Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, is joined by Manny Lopez, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Congress, D17, which comprises the entirety of Sarasota County.
The rally was one of several recent steps Sarasota Democrats took to capitalize on the recent momentum in the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris, Gov. Tim Walz, and the party's other national, state, and local candidates.
The Sarasota County Democratic Party (SCDP) and Longboat Key Democratic Club have reserved six billboards at busy locations throughout the county. These billboards display messages supporting the party's national, state, and local candidates and highlighting Democratic policies supporting reproductive freedom, opposition to the MAGA Republican Project 2025, and protection of voting rights.
Jamie Emhoff, the sister of Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, was in attendance for both Sarasota County events.
The billboards join an ongoing media blitz started ahead of the Aug. 20 primary, which resulted in the upset election of Liz Barker and the re-election of Tom Edwards to the Sarasota School Board. Barker unseated current board President Karen Rose and signaled that despite voter registration gaps, Democrats are tuning out voters in high numbers in support of their candidates.
Recognizing Sarasota County's significance in its mission to bring about positive change in Florida, the Harris-Walz campaign appointed Karen Lundeen as a full-time Regional Field Organizer in Sarasota. This staffing allocation will provide Sarasota County with additional resources leading up to November.
The Sarasota County Democratic Party (SCDP) is the local committee of the Florida Democratic Party. The mission of the SCDP is to encourage the fullest participation by all voters who believe in true freedom and fairness in our society. We stand up for justice, equality, and opportunity for our citizens and support qualified candidates who will promote these goals.
