SARASOTA — Florida’s 17th Congressional District, represented by Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL), has received $361,523,812.85 to date in federal funding, popularly known as Bidenomics, according to data provided by Sarasota County and the federal government. Steube voted against all of it.
The data, received from Sarasota County Public Records and compiled from USAspending.gov, Build.gov, and federal agency news releases, showed that Sarasota County received $359,454,712.85 in funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the American Rescue Plan Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, the Continuing Appropriations Act of 2023, several congressional earmarks and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants. Steube voted against all of them.
Charlotte County received an environmental grant of $1,819,600 for a project in Port Charlotte and $249,500 for comprehensive safe streets and roads. Steube has represented the 17th District, which includes Sarasota, Charlotte, and a sliver of Lee counties since the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature gerrymandered it.
“Greg Steube won the honor to represent the people of the 17th District in 2022 but has done nothing for them since,” said Sarasota County Democratic Party Chair Daniel Kuether.
“In addition to voting against all of President Biden’s landmark economic legislation, much of it passed with bipartisan support and of enormous benefit to the people of his district, Steube has squandered his time in Washington by filing ludicrous articles of impeachment void of any evidence.”
The federal funds Steube voted against have gone to projects such as the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads; Sarasota County Alligator Creek Stream Restoration; Coronavirus state and local fiscal recovery; an Environmental Protection Agency grant for climate pollution reduction; community development block grant for disaster recovery; and several FAA grants for airport infrastructure improvements in Sarasota, Punta Gorda, and Venice.
Steube also voted against FEMA funding for victims of Hurricanes Ian and Idalia, the Chips and Science Act, and the PACT Act to help veterans and has been soliciting constituent support for ending U.S. assistance to Ukraine in its fight for survival and democracy against Russia.
"Steube stated in his appeal, 'This is not a war that America is fighting.'" Kuether asked, "If Congressman Stuebe doesn't stand with the people of Ukraine, who does he stand with? His voting record indicates it's not the people of the 17th."
