The Sarasota County Democratic Party has joined Ukrainian neighbors in urging Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) to vote for a $95 billion Ukrainian foreign aid package passed by the US Senate.
SARASOTA — The Sarasota County Democratic Party (SCDP) joins our Ukrainian neighbors today in demanding that Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) vote for the long-awaited Ukrainian foreign aid package passed by the U.S. Senate this morning.
“The moment of reckoning on critical aid for Ukraine has now come for Greg Steube,” said SCDP Chair Daniel Kuether. “He can either vote for the emergency aid legislation that will now go to the House, or he can stand with Vladimir Putin and his brutal aggression against Ukraine.”

In a bipartisan 70-29 vote, the Senate passed the $95 billion measure this morning, a big step forward in President Biden’s drive to send more aid to Ukraine. Florida’s Republican Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott voted against the measure.

The Senate-passed measure would provide an additional $60.1 billion for Ukraine as well as $14.1 billion for Israel’s war against Hamas and almost $10 billion for humanitarian aid for civilians in conflict zones, including Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Steube, who represents the 17th Congressional District covering Sarasota, Charlotte, and a sliver of Lee counties, has consistently voted against Ukraine aid in the House. According to the website World Population Review. Florida has the 6th largest Ukrainian population, the largest concentration in the southern U.S., much of which is centered around the North Port area of Sarasota County.

“I would remind Rep. Steube that the United States has led the international coalition supporting the brave Ukrainians in their fight against the gravest act of aggression in Europe since the end of World War II,” Kuether said. “You either stand with the Ukrainians, Congressman Steube, or you stand with Vladimir Putin.”
As a member of the MAGA Republican Freedom Caucus, Steube also has voted against emergency FEMA funding for hurricane victims, against all the Biden administration’s economic legislation that has brought $361.5 million in federal investment and thousands of jobs to the district, against awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to the U.S. Capitol Police who risked their lives to save him on Jan. 6, 2021; and for the failed impeachments of Biden and U.S. Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.
