SARASOTA – Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fl), who represents Sarasota County in the U.S. Congress, used his weekly newsletter to denounce the unanimous jury verdict that convicted Donald Trump on all 34 felony counts in New York.
Steube’s denial and rejection of the sacred judicial process on which our democracy is founded is just one more example of his MAGA extremism and violation of his oath to the Constitution. In his newsletter, Steube called the trial “a disgrace” and “nothing but election interference.”
“Once again, Republicans deal with losing – whether an election or trial – by crying foul rather than providing any evidence or facts to back their position,” said Daniel Kuether, Chair of the Sarasota County Democratic Party. “Steube will eventually be made to account for not just endorsing a convicted felon for President of the United States but for his many other actions that have displayed a disdain for following the rule of law in America.”
- Despite a mountain of evidence, including lawsuits, recounts, forensic audits, and even partisan reviews of the 2020 presidential election in which Joe Biden won with 306 electoral votes, Steube voted not to certify the election or allow the peaceful transfer of power to take place in our country.
- Following the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in which members of the Capitol Police force were beaten, tased, and doused with pepper spray, Steube refused to honor members of the 2021 Capitol Police who risked their lives to save his. Voting against presenting members of the Capitol Police Force with the Gold Medal of Honor was a shocking rebuke from a member of Congress who claims to be from the law-and-order party.
- Steube took denying the results of the 2020 presidential election one step further when he voted in 2021 against the Protecting Our Democracy Act, which addresses several issues including election integrity and security. He apparently believes an election is stolen only when GOP candidates lose, and Democrats win.
