The following is a statement by Manny Lopez, Sarasota County-based Democratic candidate running to represent District 17 in the U.S. House of Representatives issued on October 28, 2024.
The racism and other filth that emerged from the mouths of the speakers at Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden last night was deeply offensive to me and my fellow Hispanic Americans.
We have good reason to be proud of our contributions to the United States since even before its founding, including having earned the second highest number of Congressional Medals of Honor and, in the case of Puerto Ricans specifically, more Purple Hearts than any other ethnic group.
Yet my opponent Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fl) has remained silent on this, and the other horrific rhetoric spewed at Trump’s rally that even The New York Times described as “a closing carnival of grievances, misogyny and racism.”
Let’s be clear about this important point: Last night’s attack against Hispanics, African Americans and Vice President Kamala Harris herself was not just a statement about Trump, but a crystal-clear view into the minds and souls of his MAGA enablers and supporters. Sarasotans need to remember on Nov. 5 that Greg Steube is and has been one of Trump’s staunchest advocates.
We knew last night’s rally was going to be filled with prejudice and rage as it was drawing comparisons even before it started to the 1939 Madison Square Garden rally supporting Hitler and the Nazi party.
Instead of trying to divide Americans through hatred and vitriol as my opponent Greg Steube does, my campaign celebrates all Americans. I am proud of my heritage and can point with honor to the nearly 65 million Hispanic Americans making important contributions to our country every day.
Please join me in creating a country that celebrates the common good in people, and together let’s send Greg Steube and the rest of the GOP a message that their hateful and racist views do not represent America.
